Early Britain

Around 11,000 - 8,000 bc the Ice Age was coming to an end in Britain and was replaced by increased rainfall which led to an environment change. Forests sprang up harbouring Wolves, Brown Bears and Wild Boar. As a result, Humans were largeley confined to the Limestone and Chalk hills where Forests couldn't grow until the development of farming around 4000 bc.
Stone walls were a prominent feature of these farms and were believed to have been built to separate crop fields from fields used for cattle grazing. Villages with many stone houses were also found close to the farming sites and farming practices in use today such as leaving fields fallow for a year appear to have been in practice.
