| 1648 - Salt Riot (Moscow) | Also known as the Moscow Uprising, was brought about by the government's plan of substituting various taxes with a universal direct tax on salt. On 2nd June, the rebels burst into the Kremlin and demanded the surrender of Leontiy Pleshcheyev (head of Moscow Police Department) as well as other prominent officials. On June 3rd Leontiy Pleshcheyev was handed over to the insurgents and soon found himself executed whilst rebels set fire to the White City and Kitai-gorod before ransacking some 70 households of the of the most hated boyars, diaks, okolnichys, and merchants. Sporadic rebellions, triggered by the Salt Riot in Moscow, continued to take place throughout Russia, but they largely died out by January of 1649 with the adoption of the Sobornoye Ulozheniye (Legal Code), which satisfied most of the demands posed by the nobility. |
| 1662 - Copper Riot (Moscow) | Preceeded by a gradual deterioration of the Russian economy due to war and and a sharp increase in taxes. A few days before the riot it became clear that a list of people responsible for economic misfortunes existed within the wider community and that these lists were posted in several Moscow neighbourhoods. On July 25th up to 10,000 muscovites mostly from lower classes took part in the Copper Riot and later demanded that the traitors be surrendered to the people and steps be taken to stabilize the economy. |
