Rumoured to have governed the city of Yangzhou for three years sometime between 1282 and 1287. (story based on the interpretation of one word)

Marco Polo is buried in the Church of San Lorenzo

Marco Polo was only six years old when his father and uncle left to travel east to trade goods. When he got back to Venice he discovered his wife had died, leaving Marco who was fifteen to be taken care of.

He was also amazed by coal, or stones that burn like logs," as he described it in his book.

Marco met the Great Khan, and the Khan liked him so much that he gave Marco different official jobs.

He was one of the first Europeans to travel into Mongolia and China.

He became famous for his book that told the story of his travels along the Silk Road to China.

Polo was captured by the Genoese and imprisoned by them. While in jail, Marco dictated the story of his travels to a writer who published the book, The Travels of Marco Polo.
