Michelangelo - Quick facts
Michelangelo was born on 6 March 1475 in Caprse near Arezzo, Tuscany.
His birth name was Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni.
Michelangelo's sculptures were often sculpted from marble blocks which he personally selected from the quarry in Carrara, Italy.
An inspired poet he dedicated many poems and sonnets to Vittoria Colonna.
One of his most famous works is 'Pieta', which is a depiction of Jesus on the lap of mother Mary.
His Statue of Moses, which is the most striking feature of the Pope's tomb, is surprisingly one work that was never completed to Michelangelo's satisfaction.
Historical records reveal that Michelangelo had discontinued his work in the field of art from 1527 to 1529 in order to defend the Republic of Florence.
Michelangelo died on February 18, 1564 at the age of 88. He was the first Western artist whose biography was published while he was alive.
